Tools can be expensive to purchase. This is a list of tools that are most important to have on hand as a new homeowner.

Tools for Basic Home Repairs

  1. Duct tape
  2. Hammer
  3. Screwdrivers (flathead, phillips, and allen; different sizes)
  4. Putty knife (different widths and sizes; useful for scraping as well as puttying)
  5. Tape measure (a 25 foot tape will handle most small household jobs)
  6. Vise grips (useful for helping to loosen tight nuts)
  7. Utility knife (with replacement blades)
  8. Caulking gun
  9. Screws, nails, bolts, of several sizes
  10. Level (used to check whether surfaces are plumb or level)
  11. Pry bar (for nail pulling and prying)
  12. Adjustable wrench
  13. Adjustable pliers  

Tools for More Advanced Projects

  1. Pair of pipe wrenches (for plumbing projects)
  2. Pipe cutter
  3. Belt sander (for sanding off paint and varnishes)
  4. Cordless drill/driver (buy a set of drill bits too)
  5. Diagonal cutters (for cutting wire)
  6. Clamps (a pair, for projects involving gluing or fastening)
